Barbara Sheil

Dr Barbara Sheil completed her PhD in microbiology and immunology in Ireland before moving to Perth in 2009. She has an extensive career studying the human immune system and interaction of immune cells with their internal (neurological, mental and emotional) as well as external environments to create normal, healthy individuals.
She currently works as a research scientist in children’s health with special focus on childhood diabetes, an emerging area of increasing concern in the medical community. She is Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the School of Paediatrics and Child Health at UWA and is extending her expertise to the area of environmental health to encompass the origins of the diseases that she has focused on in her career including autoimmune disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis and diabetes in both adults and children.
