The Insider's Guide to the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is mostly known for Michelangelo’s ceiling decoration, but it’s much more than that. This class will discuss the chapel’s rich history from its early conception in the 1470s to Michelangelo’s painting of the Last Judgement and the controversy it caused less than a century later. We will move between weighty things such as divine inspiration and earthly matters like back pain and dripping paint. Special attention will be paid to Michelangelo’s status as a (lonesome) genius: although Michelangelo did not perceive himself as a painter, his contemporaries saw proof of his divine status in the ceiling’s fresco.
