Shane completed his PhD at UWA in 2011 (thesis: Migration and Acculturation: the impact of the Norse on eastern England c. 865-900), having previously completed an MA at Uppsala University (Sweden) in 2006 and a BA (Honours) at UWA in 2004. Shane has published a number of journal articles, the most recent of which (Warriors and Women: the ratio of Norse migrants to England up to 900 AD, Early Medieval Europe 19.3, 2011) somehow became the subject of online newspaper reports in the USA (USA Today) and UK (Mail on Sunday). As well as lecturing at UWA Shane is an active member of the Perth Medieval and Renaissance Group and Vice President of the Australian Early Medieval Association.
